  1. A couple of things ...

    Performance is definitely an issue with overleaf. My co-authors and I may not stick with it, primarily because of the slow performance. It looks like two big issues impact performance:
    1. The refresh preview is very slow. I tried clicking the "manual" button, thinking then it would not refresh automatically, but it still does. Either manual refresh is not working, or it doesn't do what I assumed it does.

    2. vim emulation is extremely slow. Is it implemented in javascript? If so, that might be an unsolvable problem.

  2. Rich text editor should render user defined commands

    I use a lot of commands like
    \newcommand{\RR}{\mathbb R}
    at the beginning of my document. I like the rich text thing, but it is would be way nicer if it could render the user defined commands.

  3. Allow users to toggle source/preview panes from left/right to right/left.

    I prefer working with source code in the right pane and previewing the pdf on the left. Although I could fake this by opening two separate windows on the same project, I would nonetheless welcome a feature that allowed users to make this (cosmetic) switch within the editor.

  4. Edit of .bib doesn't work

    Modification of an uploaded .bib doesn't work through the overleaf interface.

    Tried in firefox and opera, tries to open an additional window, but appears to miss a plug-in decoder?

    Thus, I have to add additional references manually. This is quite annoying.

    Thanks for getting in touch. You should be able to edit a .bib file directly in Overleaf by clicking on it in the project menu - unless you imported it from an online reference manager, such as Mendeley (see https://www.overleaf.com/blog/184).

    There shouldn’t be any plugins or extra windows, so it may help if you can send us some screenshots and a detailed description of the steps you took before getting the error via www.overleaf.com/contact. Thanks!

  5. simple project copying?

    There doesn't seem to be a simple way to "copy and paste" an existing project to create a new one. The "Open a Copy" is confusing and it's not clear if or how to save it under a new name. I assume one can Download and then re-Upload though I don't know if that would simply overwrite/update the original project.

  6. Reformat LaTex

    Auto reformat LaTex Code following certain rules.

    The idea is to have a button to reformat your LaTex code like most IDEs do, to reformat you Java code for example.

    So for example you have LaTex Code like this:

    \begin{matrix}
    1&0\\
    2&0\\
    \end{matrix}

    and after some magic by the button it looks like this:

    - = space

    \begin{matrix}
    ----1 & 0 \\
    ----2 & 0 \\
    \end{matrix}

    I don't know if this is possible but I would really like to see this feature.

  7. Timeout period is too short?

    I don't think the timeout period is adequate. When the system is pegged, and underperforming (which it is, clearly so), the timeout does not scale in a commensurate way.

    I was excited to use overleaf but it doesn't seem to be able to manage more than 3-5 pages with 8 or so images without crapping out. I have to manage the document by slicing it up into slivers which is a real PITA. Thumb is tilting ever so slightly from its initial thumbs up state.

  8. Automatic Replace (like in Google Docs)

    Hi!
    I would love to have a feature to save some time while typing the same things over and over... define a short term which gets automatically replaced by its long form

  9. Custom display fonts for editor

    I don't use/understand the rich text editor, but the default fixed width font in the regular editor makes some diacritics hard to see. I would be doing a lot less compiling and editing if I could use a display font that was easier on my eyes! Is that heretical, or could it be as simple as the custom themes?

  10. Changing settings seems to work oddly (usability problem)

    I wanted to change my editor setting. I clicked "Update Settings," and was surprised to get the message:
    2 errors found:
    Password confirmation doesn't match Password
    Current password can't be blank

    I was surprised because (1) nothing on the screen indicated I would need to enter my password again to change my editor, (2) I don't see why I need to re-authenticate to change my editor; that seems like overkill, (3) I was required to enter my password into TWO boxes, "Confirm new password" and "Confirm current password."

  11. Add keyboard shortcuts/chords for navigating section a-la "C-c =" in AucTex emacs

    the best way I could find to navigate sections is via search of name strings - cumbersome considering the suggestion in the title is available in AucTex.

  12. Show the exact place of the pointer in PDF (jump to pdf)

    The "jump to tex" works well, but the other side does not.

    I am aware of the "position in preview" feature (Ctrl + Comma):
    https://www.writelatex.com/blog/158

    But it just shows the related page. I want more detailed matching so I can jump to the exact point in PDF immediately.

    It is a very useful idea to have a red oval (or something else) over the exact equivalent position in PDF.

    And it's better to have an option to show this oval always (even though it may make the compilation slower). This way there is no need to press "Ctrl + Comma"…

  13. enhace rich editor

    In Rich Editor when something changes showing to code (when focusing to edit) maintain block height to enhace reading and editing (avoid moving up the next text). Also a "WYSIWYG" popup could be helpfull as a next step.

  14. I would suggest adding templates for more scientific journals, such as, Genome Research, Molecular Ecology etc. Extremely useful!!!

    I just noticed that overleaf provides templates for Genetics, G3, and MBE etc. This is great! I would suggest adding templates for more scientific journals, such as, Genome Research, Molecular Ecology etc. Extremely useful!!!

  15. One-click move of all tables and figures to end of file

    Certain publishers (which is actually, one of the ones listed on your "publish" section) require all tables and figures to be at the end of the file rather than embedded in the text as per "house style". While this is easy to do with some copy and pasting, it seems like something that is fairly straightforward to code so that you can have a one click "toggle" of having the tables and figures either in the main text, or at the end of the file. This would save a lot of tedious work, especially when having to resubmit to different…

  16. Allow people who use emacs or vim key bindings to click on rich text anyway.

    It's fine that I would lose the key bindings. It would be great to be able to use source and vim for heavy editing, and your wonderful rich text interface for lighter editing, without having to go through preferences each time.

  18. BibTeX / Zotero / UTF8: convert .bib files to LaTeX compatible format

    When using import from Zotero, the export looks to be UTF8, which is known to cause many problems with BibTeX. If there was a way of converting them to LaTeX escaped codes, like e.g. KBibTeX is doing, that would be really helpful.

    Thanks for reporting this. The conversion to BibTeX is handled by Zotero’s API, so we’ll get in touch with them and see if we can work out a way of getting the .bib with escape codes (possibly as an option). In the interim, the UTF-8 .bib files should work well if you are using the more modern biblatex / biber toolchain, which has much better unicode support.

  19. svg support

    Please support the svg package correclty (needs inkscape within path):
